Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to use a self-service laundromat?
Great news — it won't break the bank! Pricing at Soap Bar depends on machine size, so you only pay for what you actually need:
- $6 — Double load washer (9kg) — think two level laundry baskets
- $8 — Triple load washer (14kg) — perfect for double doonas and blankets
- $14 — Jumbo washer (27kg) — king quilts, thick winter bedding, the whole lot
- $1 per 8 mins — High-speed gas dryers (usually done in 24 minutes!)
That's often cheaper — and way faster — than doing multiple loads at home. Complimentary washing powder included at every machine.
Do I need to bring my own detergent to the laundromat?
Yes and no — and we love a good curveball! Most self-service laundromats make you lug your own detergent, bleach and dryer sheets. Not us. If you forget (it happens to the best of us), we have double-concentrate detergent available free of charge at every machine. Of course, if you have a preferred brand or sensitive skin, bring your own — our commercial machines handle all detergents, no cross-contamination between loads.
Is it safe to leave clothes unattended at a laundromat?
Technically you can, but we wouldn't recommend it — mainly because someone might helpfully move your clothes so they can use the machine (the cheek!). The good news is, hanging around Soap Bar is actually pleasant. Every location has free high-speed WiFi, device charging ports, wireless charging pads, and comfortable seating. So stay a while, get some work done, and keep an eye on your gear. We'll SMS you when your cycle finishes too.
What are the unwritten rules of laundromat etiquette?
Ah, the sacred laws of the laundromat. Follow these and you'll be everyone's favourite neighbour:
- Don't be a lingerer. Remove your clothes promptly when the cycle ends — other people are waiting.
- Leave it how you found it. Check drums before use, toss lint in the bin, and please don't leave a trail of dryer sheets.
- Share the love. If it's busy, don't commandeer every large-capacity washer and all three folding tables. We see you.
Basically — be the person you wish everyone else was. Gold star awarded.
How long does a wash and dry cycle take at a coin laundromat?
Faster than you'd think! Wash cycles at Soap Bar take around 27–30 minutes depending on fabric type and temperature. Drying usually takes 30–45 minutes, though our high-speed gas dryers often knock out 1–2 loads in as little as 24 minutes. Pop your clothes in, grab a coffee next door, and you're done before you know it. Request a free SMS alert at the kiosk and we'll let you know the exact moment your load is finished.
Can I use multiple washing machines at once?
Absolutely — and this is one of the great joys of a self-service laundromat! Running two or three machines simultaneously is completely fine and is actually the smartest way to get everything done in one visit. Just be a good human about it: don't monopolise the entire floor when it's busy, and transfer to the dryer promptly so the next person can jump on. Wash smarter, not harder.
Are public laundromats sanitary and clean?
At Soap Bar? Absolutely yes. Our facilities are cleaned and sanitised regularly, and we take this seriously. That said, we always recommend giving the drum a quick sniff before loading your clothes — trust your nose. If you spot anything off (mildew smell, visible residue), don't just suffer in silence! Call, SMS, or email us and we can fix most problems immediately, including running an automated drum wash remotely. We'd rather know than not. Clean machines, clean conscience.
Are you open on public holidays?
Yes — 365 days a year, we never close. We are an essential service and our customer support doesn't take a break either. Open 6am–11:30pm every single day of the year, including Christmas, Easter and every public holiday in between.
Do you allow drying only?
Of course! Our dryers are fast — eco-friendly, gas powered, high air flow and very large. Clothes washed at home will take a little longer to dry than clothes washed in our commercial washer/extractors, but our commercial dryers take around 1/5 of the time and energy that your home dryer might. Drying only is always welcome.
What payment methods are accepted?
All Soap Bar locations accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Google Pay, Apple Wallet and PayPal. Most stores are fully cashless with email receipts sent automatically. Our Hawthorn laundromat also accepts $1 and $2 coins and has a change machine on-site if you prefer.
Do you have a machine for pet bedding?
We do! At our
Brunswick West store we have a dedicated 14kg pet machine. There's also a warm organic DIY dog wash in the car park, plus one-handed pet parking, shade and a water bowl sink. Closest to Parkville, Ascot Vale, Moonee Ponds and Flemington.
